Talk about pressure

Posted May 6, 2009 3:02:41 PM

Dominican University didn't say it last week but it was obvious nonetheless: All the pressure, expectations and hope on DU successfully moving up from NAIA to NCAA DII is on the shoulders of the new athletic director, Terry Tumey. Tumey is the former 49er front office official who found himself in a diminishing role, thanks to Mike Nolan.

"DU will flourish under my tenure here," Tumey said.

We'll know if Dominican is flourishing if, when comparisons are being made, that Sonoma State is unable to keep up with titles won and big-time athletes acquiring. Whether the two schools like it or not, comparisons are inevitable.

Is this crazy or what?

Posted May 6, 2009 2:58:05 PM

Dave Ashworth, commissioner of the SCL, remembers when he played sports for Sonoma Valley back in 1955.

"There was a mandatory two-week break between sports," Ashworth said. "After leaving one sport an athlete had to wait two weeks before playing another one. Couldn't even practice."

That's so crazy! Resting between sports? Letting our body heal, relax? Crazy. Just crazy.

What a MLB scout looks for...

Posted May 5, 2009 3:39:46 PM

While I was watching Matt Nadolski pitch last week against Montgomery, Doug Thurman, the Northern California and Northern Nevada scout for the New York Mets, was in the stands. I asked him what he looks for in a prospect. Doug responded and wanted me to make sure I wasn't referring to Nadolski but to baseball prospects in general.

"The better the athlete," Doug said, "the easier it's going to be for him to make adjustments. That's what baseball is all about - the ability to make adjustments. I have found the more versatile an athlete is, the more he uses and knows his body. Therefore, he is more able to learn those adjustments because he is using more of his body than say a one-sport athlete. It is what we call the Sixth Tool, body awareness. Major league scouts like looking at multi-sport athletes."

I have one parent who is coming forward...

Posted May 5, 2009 3:34:34 PM
The interview and the column will be coming next week and by the tone of his e-mail this father is more than willing to discuss how he learned perspective in dealing with his sons playing sports. I can't wait to sit down and talk to him.

If there is a parent out there...

Posted May 4, 2009 5:58:03 PM
who would like to come forward and talk about how they went from badgering their kid-athlete, who realized it was harmful, who decided to back off and take the pressure off their child, who gained perspective in other words, I would love to tell your story.

By the way I was talking about SOME parents

Posted May 4, 2009 5:32:18 PM

In Sunday's column I wrote about the pressure parents put on their kids, especially in athletics, and some readers thought I was referring to ALL parents. To be clear, once again, I was not and am not referring to ALL parents but there are enough of them out there who give school administrators migraines. Some of the stories I have heard over the years make me cringe for the kids.

The other parents, the ones who don't give coaches or kids migraines, I never hear about them only because parents with perspective are content to let coaches coaches, kids play, understanding these are amateur athletes.
