Another Billy G story

Posted May 12, 2009 5:46:52 PM

Never knew one person could have so many stories about him...

After my column on Billy Gianquinto was published this morning, Lorenzo Freschet sent me an e-mail with this Billy G, who taught at SR Middle School and Piner while officiating basketball games in college, not to mention his duck-calling business....

"He taught both of my kids and many of the parents of the kids at SR Middle School," Freschet wrote. "One day he brought a horse to school just to show them what one looks like."

Now that's a teacher I wish but never had.

If El Mo gets to Saturday....

Posted May 11, 2009 11:59:36 AM

The boys volleyball team will play for the NCS title at the El Mo gym at 7 p.m.

Prom is 8 p.m.

Rumor is, girls wearing prom dresses will get in the game free.

Knowing the boy volleyballers, I would dare any of them to wear a tux while they play. Fact is, I wouldn't dare them. I know at least one who would and I am not naming any names, Mike Starr....and I sure wouldn't bet against either, Ned Formaker.....

Hey, knucklehead...

Posted May 8, 2009 10:57:10 PM

You know who you are...making that fraudulent post this week, giving me a phone number, claiming to be a father who wants to come clean and be interviewed on why he was an abusive parent to his athletic kids....Yeah, I called the number, talked to the guy, he never made that post. He thinks it was a sick joke. I think of something worse.... You, knucklehead, you did it, thought you were cute I am sure, but exactly what was the upside for you anyway? All you did was paint yourself as pathetic, someone who gets his kicks this? Huh? You need a life, or at least a hobby.

Loser.

The NBL or SCL can make stricter rules than CIF

Posted May 7, 2009 2:03:08 PM

Always thought a CIF rule was untouchable. Not true. For example, the CIF allows member schools to practice however they like when school is out in the summer. So if you want to schedule a full-pads football practice there was nothing to stop you.

Not true.

Dave Ashworth, the SCL commissioner, said a league can add a rule on top of a CIF rule. In this case, the SCL: has told all its schools that helmets and shoes are permissible for summer football practice but pads are not allowed.

If a school has a summer practice in pads, that coach better have a good explanation - like they are going to scrimmage the Raiders the next day. Otherwise, be kind to the kids.

Plus, you can get a college scholarship

Posted May 7, 2009 1:58:12 PM
Scott McMahan is the ace of El Molino's volleyball team, quite clearly a college-potential athlete. The junior very likely will have plenty of colleges contacting him. McMahan said Wednesday he is interested in Pepperdine, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Penn State, the three-time defending NCAA volleyball champions.

So what's wrong with volleyball anyway?

Posted May 7, 2009 1:51:28 PM

If you saw what I saw Wednesday at El Molino, volleyball wouldn't be a third-tier sport. What I saw on the court was equal if not superior to any energy I have seen during football practice, or basketball, baseball, whatever. Part of it, of course, was the coach, Bob Gessinger, making something that could be dreadfully dull and routine into a non-stop dip into fun, with a volleyball education thrown in.

The sport is not for sissies - ever get a volleyball smashed in your face - and the reaction time necessary is certainly the equal of any sport. El Mo has the only boys volleyball team in Sonoma County. Doesn't make sense. I never knew what was so wrong about the sport. Still don't.
